Warranting Procedures

Currently, we have a woefully out of date Roster (something I am working to get under control), and a few administrative changes will be going into effect directly after festival.

Firstly, it has been decided by the Lochac Seneschal and myself, that group heralds will be appointed and warranted using the warranting procedures laid out by the Lochac Seneschal for the appointment of greater officers.

To select a new group herald, the outgoing group herald will advertise the vacancy and call for written applications. Copies of all applications are to be sent to the Crux Australis Herald who shall, after taking advice from the Group's Seneschal, any local royalty and the outgoing herald, make a decision on which applicant shall fill the vacancy.

Two year warrants will be issued to all group heralds in May of this year - regardless of how long you have been in the job at present. Of course, you may quit your warrant at any time. There will be 12 month extensions provided where necessary, as we understand not just any Johnny Come-lately can step into the role of Group herald. Part of your role within the college is to educate and teach those around you, and I would suggest everyone start looking around and training up a deputy if you haven't done so already.

The Roster as is stands will continue to be kept, as an internal list of who holds which position, and hopefully, as an accurate reflection of the number of 'at large' heralds in the Kingdom.

Positions Vacant,

Canon Herald. Deputy in charge of the gentry and precedence lists.

Morag's service to the College in the role of Canon is drawing to a close, and she intends to hand over this role at May crown. As such we are seeking applications for her replacement. I have one expression of interest and would like this finalised by the 18th April meeting. Please forward applications/expressions of interest to canon@sca.org.auand herald@sca.org.aubefore the closing date, or feel free to deliver your application in person at Festival. If you require any information on this role please speak to Morag.

Crux Australis. Principal Herald.

The updated duties and position description is available on the Lochac College of Heralds website. At the moment, I will only be filling the position until Midwinter to be exact. Should you be interested in applying, please contact me as soon as possible. For further information on the role, it's joys and pitfalls please contact herald@sca.org.au.

Additions to the Roster

With the information I have at hand, I am adding to the Roster the following gentles. Sable three acorns inverted within a bordure embattled Or.

Lilith of Tara

Consulting Herald - Sabine du Bourbonnais

Name documentation (appears to have been lost)

Lilith is 'not a name used by humans in period' apparently.

Some considered 'Tara' to be pretentious or presumptuous

Device has no conflicts

Llewelyn ap Daffyd name reg Sept 2002

Consulting Herald - none listed

Returned for conflict with Otto von Gratz - Registered March 1995 via Drachenwald

Sable, a bend betressed between two crosses crosslet fitchy Or

Will suggest that submitter tries consulting a herald next time, this is his second device return.

Luan O'Cliaranach an Fael

No name documentation attached. Name appears free of conflict.

Can not quite work out a suitable blazon for the device - the 'pale' is drawn too wide, and side sections are too small to be tierces. The arrangement of four charge items (wolfs head, sword, rapier and dagger) in a single field area violates RfS VIII.1.a - slot machine rule.

Michael vomme Harze

Consulting Herald - none listed

Name Registered May 03 via Caid

This device created a lot of confusion. The submitter had written that a bordure was intended, if this is the case, it should be drawn thicker and will need to be counter changed to avoid contrast problems.

If the charge is a pile should stop short of the top line. Needs to be clarified and redrawn.

Tristan de Poitiers Name forwarded to Laurel

Consulting Herald - none listed

The gurges as an overall charge is fine, roses on a gurges is fine, if the design is drawn - Argent, a gurges sable, two roses proper in bend sinister. Submission was drawn as Sable a gurges argent, two roses proper in bend sinister, leaving no contrast between the roses and the field. Commenters also note this design bears little or no resemblance to period heraldic design. Suggest redraw with an argent field, larger roses, in fess or in chief, or even 3 (2 and 1)- or start again.

Villiame Bryson of Argyle

Consulting Herald - Sabine du Bourbonnais

Conflict - Neville; Earl of Warwick important non SCA arms

Suggest redrawing with charges on a saltire in stead of on the field

William de Wyke - name only

Returned for conflict with 'William the Wicked' - Registered November 2001 via Calontir

PENDED by Crux

Royal Guild of Defense

Waiting for supporting documentation..

Katherine Kerr of the Hermitage

Submitter provided a detailed essay about her persona, but no copies of documentation. One commenter offers 'bears no resemblance to period name construction'.

CAMeL Subscriptions

All group heralds are required to organise a subscription to the Camel, which will be available from Crux Australis on a monthly basis. Subscription cost $20 per year (Cheques payable to "SCA Inc. College of Heralds"). Due to the fact that there has been only four CAMeLs produced in the last 20 months, none of which were printed and distributed, I am giving each group a subscription, starting with this March 2004 issue, for 12 months, at which point, each individual group will need to resubscribe.

[Contents]

Submission Requirements

Cost:$20 per new submission (name, device or badge). No cost for resubmissions (within the permitted time limit) or branch submissions. Note: a new name and device costs a total of $40. Make cheques or money orders payable to "SCA Inc. College of Heralds". Do not send cash through the post!

Copies required: - Names: two (2) copies of both the form and ALL documentation, including title page of each book. Essays about a submitter's persona does NOT constitute documentation. - NO STAPLES! Devices and Badges: four(4) colour copies and one (1) black & white OUTLINE copy.

The colour copies should be accurately coloured, preferably in felt tip pen (eg Crayola Classic Colours). Colour printers or faint coloured pencil is not acceptable. The colours must be visible across a crowded Herald's meeting. Laurel has requested that gold pen NOT be used, as it deteriorates in files and turns to glue - Submissions

Please include ALL necessary documentation to support each submission. It is the responsibility of the submitter to present their submission in a way that makes registration easy. Name documentation should be as accurate as possible: remember to include photocopies of the title page as well as the relevant page(s) of any source used.

From The Crux

As most of your would be aware, the office of the Crux Australis Herald has been in disarray for a while. Over the past six weeks or so, I have endeavoured to bring us up to speed. Here is the state of affairs as they currently stand -

The November 2003 LoI packet has been received by Laurel, and we are no longer in arrears with our remittances, so this packet is scheduled to be discussed at their April 2004 meeting. The March 2004 LoI has been sent, and the packet has been received by Laurel. It will be processed and scheduled as per normal timelines and procedures.

I have sent out overdue letters to submitters (60 odd persons) whose devices have been registered since July 2002. Letters have also been sent advising submitters (another 20 odd) about returns from Crux during that period also.

Also, I have compiled copies of registered devices since July 2002, and have sent these to the Provost of the College of Scribes to be distributed amongst the College for the production of scrolls.

I have had a huge backlog to work through, and in order not to delay items further, have allowed a lot of things to go through that would not ordinarily pass muster. This situation will NOT continue, and I expect all submitting heralds to ensure submissions are totally complete - I will not be hunting down/copying name documentation, and drawing up black and white copies of devices in the future. These incomplete submissions will be returned.

Thank you to everyone who offered commentary this for March via the Blazons list and on Fruitbats website, the valuable information you offered allowed us to catch up quickly. As you can see, the role of the Crux is nearly back to normal. Should you be thinking of applying for the position, I foresee a completely hassle free up to date handover.

The supportive attitude displayed by the college has been very much appreciated.
