Subscriptions
C.A.M.(e).L. is available from Crux Australis at $20 per year.
Make cheques payable to "SCA Inc. College of Heralds". Laurel's
Letter of Acceptance and Return is available from the SCA College of Arms,
C/O Mistress Sionyn Muirgen niDhomnall, Pelican Queen of Arms, Jackie Watson,
3532 Winding Wind Cove, Bartlett, TN 38135-3044, USA for US$25 per year.
Make cheques payable to "SCA Inc. - College of Arms".
Please note that everything of relevance to Lochac will be published in
the CAMeL.
From Crux
Remember, all submissions must be on the new forms by the end
of the year. Please colour the metals in white or yellow, not gold or silver.
Using a metallic paint or pen makes it harder to discern the actual tincture
at Laurel's meeting.
I had several goals when I took on the job of Crux. One of them was to update
the PE test. I have some drafts and suggestions from Master Gereint and
Lord Decion's times as Crux. I hope to have a new test ready in the new
year. I hope to have the test cover voice and court, as well as book heraldry.
If you have any suggestions on how the test can be improved, please let
me know.
Make yourself accessible
Some of the submissions that have had the most problems come from people
who have not consulted with a herald. Some people just won't consult, or
won't take your advise. However, a few people have said that they are unable
to find their local herald. This is not good enough. Make yourself available
and publicise it in your local newsletter. For example, have an "at
home" once a month, bring your consulting books to a shire or baronial
meeting, or to tourneys. Heralds have a reputation for "bouncing"
devices unnecessarily. This is undeserved, and our job is to help submitters
to be successful. Our clients will be more satisfied if we take the time
to explain the rules and process as it applies to them, and to guide the
towards names and devices that are likely to be registered.
The Roster
I have received queries about people's current rank. The current roster
is attached to this Camel. If you have any corrections, let me know. There
are a lot of Acting PEs who probably should be PEs. If you would like to
discuss promotion, write or speak to me further.
Reports
Quarterly reports are due from all groups on the 14th of
October (one month before Coronet). Castellum Montanum has a
few active heralds in training. Apart from some voice work, things have
been fairly quiet.
Heraldic Resources
Master (Thorfinn) þorfinn is the Australian Agent for
Free Trumpet Press. As the Australian dollar is plunging in value, I have
not included a price list as it will already be out of date. Contact þorfinn
directly for the latest prices. I also recommend that groups acquire some
name resources, in particular Reaney, P.H. & Wilson, R.M. A dictionary
of English Surnames and Withycombe ,E.G. The Oxford Dictionary of
English Christian Names.
Electronic Resources
The Crux Australis web page at http://www.sca.org.au/herald
contains useful information for heralds, and links to the SCA Heraldry
page, and other general SCA pages. If you have web access, I recommend that
you take a look. Many interesting heraldic links can be found through the
SCA Heraldry web page at http://www.sca.org/heraldry including the
Laurel home page, on-line armorial and ordinary search, and the Academy
of St. Gabriel (an heraldic consultation service).
Submission Requirements.
Cost: $20 per name, and $20 per device or badge. No cost for
resubmissions. Make cheques payable to "SCA Inc College of Heralds".
Copies required for submissions:
- Names: 4 copies of Name form and ALL documentation, including title
page of each book.
- Devices/Badges: 5 COLOUR copies and one BLACK & WHITE copy.
The colour copies should be accurately coloured, preferably in felt tip
pen. e.g.. Crayola Classic Colours. Faint colour printers or faint coloured
pencil is not acceptable. The colours must be visible across a crowded Herald's
meeting!
I will reject submissions without a black and white copy as
I need to scan it to produce the Letter of Intent for Laurel. Please check
that submitters have ALL documentation. Remember, they have to present their
submission in a way that makes registration easy. Name documentation should
be as accurate as possible, and copies supplies unless the reference is
standard such as Reaney and Withycombe. Even then, the page and edition
should be quoted. I know that some of you have few name resources. There
is a lot of help available if you ask for it. I or someone overseas may
well be able to help with that tricky name. If you cannot document a name
well, you can still submit it, BUT submitters should be made aware that
if they check the 'make no changes' box, their name will be returned even
if ONE letter is incorrect.
Submissions to Laurel
1. Cainnear Rúad
Mundane name: Suzanne Hanna
Consulting herald: Aislinn de Valence
Group: Innilgard
Resubmission of name and device. Gules on a pale Or between in chief
two flames proper, a dragon's head couped gules.
Her previous name Caínnear an Ruad was returned by Laurel
in June 1998 for incorrect construction. Gaelic doesn't use an in
names. The submitter has also corrected the placement of the accent. Cainnear
is in O Corrain and Maguire p43as a variation on Cainder, and Rúad
is in the same book, p157 meaning "red-haired". The submitter
will not allow any changes. She originally resubmitted Cainnear na Rúad
but Gaelic names do not contain a definite article, and she modified her
submission after further consultation.
Her previous device had a sable bordure and was otherwise identical. It
was returned for breaking the rule of contrast. The submitter has removed
the bordure.
2. Khalil al-Jili
Mundane name : David Lundquest
Consulting herald: Chris Strusz
Group: Politarchopolis
Resubmission of name to Crux. The submitter's previous name Jili Cano
was returned for lack of documentation of Jili as a personal name.
The given name and byname appear in Da'ud ibn Auda's article "Arabic
Naming Practises and Period Names List". Now there is an acceptable
name, his device Per fess rayonny sable and gules in chief a mullet of
seven between horns of a crescent argent can now be submitted also.
3. Raoul d'Avignon
Mundane name: Michael Kenner
Consulting herald: William Forrester de Blacwode
Group: Innilgard
Resubmission of name to Laurel. His previous name André Davignon
was returned for an aural conflict with Ambré d'Avignon. Raoul
is in Dauzart "Dictionnaire étymologique des noms de famille
et prénoms de France" , Albert Dauzat (1951) at p509. d'Avignon
is a locative. Dauzart p18 gives this variation. References in another
book by Dauzart ,"Dictionnaire étymologique des Noms de lieux
en France" , p42. The submitter device was in my June LoI.
Returns
1. Wilfred de Ackelonde
Mundane name: James Agland
Consulting herald: none
Group: Parvus Portus
Resubmission of device to Crux. Name registered August 1998. His previous
device Chequy sable and argent on a bend gules three oak trees proper. His
new submission is Chequy sable and argent a fess gules. This conflicts
with the badge of Belarus (Dec 1994) Argent a fess gules.
