CAMEL, October 2019
Unto the heralds and populace of the Kingdom of Lochac does Amanda Martel, Crux Australis Principal Herald, send greetings.
This letter is somewhat later than we might otherwise have expected, but it follows the release of the Society College of Arms Letter of Acceptances and Returns. As to the delay to that letter, I can sum up the situation in one word: Pennsic. Letters whose timings are tied to Pennsic (generally those for the July and August meetings) can have this happen, and it’s all perfectly natural.

The College of Heralds had some exciting news this month, with the creation of Lochac’s fourth Herald Extraordinary, ffride wlffsdotter. This is exceptionally well deserved, as attested to by heralds not just in Lochac, but throughout the Known World.
I exhort her to devise and register her very own heraldic title at her earliest convenience.

The cover letter to this month’s LOAR had a ruling by Cormac, Wreath King of Arms, on what should go on to a herald’s tabard. I must admit to some great pleasure by its publication, as it’s a position I’ve held for quite some time, and it’s gratifying to see it also stated by such an authority.
In short, the tabard worn by a herald in the execution of their duties should be those of their employer. This may be the Crown of Lochac, or the relevant Baronial coronet, or another group’s arms in whose employ that herald finds themself. In some cases (e.g. the Society Sovereigns of Arms) those tabards are the arms of the Society. The College of Arms, to whom the crossed trumpets belong, are never a herald’s employer in this sense.
Now, I fully realise that this won’t stop people from using crossed trumpet tabards. It’s not in the power of any officer of the Society to enforce what the various members of the populace choose to wear (other than “an attempt at pre-17th century”). But, I heartily endorse you to consider something more period, and more visually interesting, than the crossed trumpets for your next tabard project. Let your group heraldry shine!
