CAMEL, May 2018
Unto the Heralds and Populace of Lochac, greetings.
This is the second year that April hasn’t had a CAMEL … I wonder why? There hasn’t been a LoAR missed, so I don’t get it – but it’s May, so here’s May’s CAMEL.
Hopefully everyone has recovered from Festival (if you attended) and the Autumn Crown Tournament. I was proud of the work of my heralds at Festival/Crown and was pleased to see many heralds at the College meeting. At the meeting I handed out copies of the new Kingdom ceremonies … each copy ‘personalised’ for each Barony, Shire and Canton. The Crown and the office of Crux also have a copy each. I still haven’t managed to get them on the website yet, but I hope to this weekend.
On the subject of the website, I am rearranging it to be more readable. Having said that, all the old content is still accessible until the replacement version comes into effect. Check the ‘ARCHVIES’ menu for the old links. The new links are broken down into what I think are suitable categories along the ‘college’ theme: ‘Noticeboard’ for posts (news/CAMEL/announcements); ‘Administration’ for office-related matters (roster, job descriptions, reports and applications); ‘Departments’ for sub-sections of the college that are in other places (Canon Lore, LRoA and OSCAR even though OSCAR isn’t Lochac’s); ‘Library’ for articles and documents (ceremonies, how-tos, links and other files). If you can think of a better structure, I’m happy to hear about it. If you have articles or links you think would be suitable for heralds in Lochac, I’d be happy to hear about it.
Just a reminder that the heralding policy is currently out for commentary until the end of the month. I am considering reorganising how that’s structured given that roles of deputies and group heralds overlap in some places and I want to avoid duplication or confusion. Please email me if you have feedback on the policy.
I have had some contact mentioning the awesome work done by some people who are not on the Roster. If you know someone who is an awesome herald but isn’t on the roster, please encourage them to complete the Herald Roster Details Form so that I can add them. If the herald happens to be under 18, this is not a deterrent. I would request that the parents complete the form (put ‘child of’ and your SCA name in with their SCA name) and perhaps even email me just to ensure I know it’s ok. There is at least one minor on the roster already. For all non-rostered heralds, if you’re that dedicated, I want to acknowledge you (and you can move up the ranks only if you’re on the roster).
Finally, I am waiting for advice from Paddy Chaineshot about people who have submitted completed Pursuivant Readiness Portfolios (Festival delay). When I have information, I will advise without waiting for the CAMEL to make up for it. I would like to suggest that all group heralds (in particular) and any long-term Macers take the opportunity to complete the PRP. I would be happy to have roster with no macers on it! If you would like to undertake the Pursuivant Readiness Project, the portfolio can be found here.

UPDATE: Chaineshot has contacted me and I have some promotions to announce. I said I wouldn’t wait.
Lord Amos Ironbeard, our next Canon Herald, is promoted to Pursuivant based on successful completion of the Pursuivant Readiness Portfolio and his work in the College of Heralds.
Lord Þorvaldr inn Suðreyski, current Canon Herald, is promoted to Pursuivant based on successful completion of the Pursuivant Readiness Portfolio. However, given his excellent work as Canon Herald (and in the College of Heralds generally), I am exercising my privilege and promoting him to Herald immediately. I have been minded to do this for some time, but did not know his pedigree in book heraldry and so I wanted to see his results on the PRP before making this promotion.
Excellent work by both gentles. Congratulations to the newest Pursuivant and Herald in the Lochac College of Heralds!
