CAMEL, October 2018
Unto the Heralds and Populace of Lochac, greetings.
This is likely my last CAMEL before stepping down as Crux Australis. It will depend on the date of the next Letter of Acceptance and Return (LoAR) from the College of Arms. Last CAMEL I gave my thanks, so I won’t be repeating them there. What I want to talk about at this moment is how things work in relation to these missives. I have heard, more than once, that there are people who think the College of Heralds is only for ‘book’ heralds. This is not true. This CAMEL, as most others, will seem ‘book herald’ heavy – but that’s because this message is in relation to name and device registrations. Perhaps my successor will talk more about voice and field heraldry than I have – but I feel that we talk in the context that applies. Voice and field heraldry gets talked about in person: verbally and in fields (sometimes). Name and device registrations happen online and so the conversations about them happen online.
If you wish to discuss anything heralding-related, there’s Lochac Heraldry Chat on Facebook, there’s the Blazons Mailing List. No-one I know wants to limit what parts of heraldry we talk about. Start a conversation. It just seems that book heraldry has more obscure rules and more detail that works better in writing. Please don’t take this as a suggestion that it’s more important to those (Crux Australis and staff) managing the College of Heralds. At the Society level, the College of Arms seems to be most focused on book heraldry too – but even there it’s not the case, just that each Kingdom does voice heraldry according to their own history … so there’s no ‘rules’ to manage.
On the subject of rules, in the Cover Letter for the latest LoAR are some decisions that I feel should be shared – it might help some people with names. Notice: these decisions are changes to previously established rules because proof was provided that changed the understanding of how things were done. For those who feel that the rules are against you unfairly – this is how things get changed. I’ve also included an item from the Society Pages that relates to one of our own. Master Bernard’s excellence is now known throughout the Society. Without further ado, from the Cover Letter:
**** From Pelican: Double given names in Hebrew ****
Appendix A currently states that double given names are not found in Jewish names rendered in Hebrew (as opposed to vernacular forms). However, in response to a submission this month, Juetta Copin provided evidence that Ashkenazic Jews sometimes used double given names in Hebrew renderings. Based on this evidence, we rule that double given names are permitted in Ashkenazic Hebrew names and request that Palimpsest update Appendix A accordingly.
**** From Pelican: Persian – Arabic combinations ****
Appendix C currently states that Persian and Arabic can be combined only after 1100 C.E. In response to a submission this month, Ursula Palimpsest provided evidence that Persian and Arabic naming pools substantially overlapped well prior to 1100 C.E. Based on this evidence, we rule that Persian and Arabic can be combined prior to 1100 C.E. and request that Palimpsest update Appendix C accordingly.
**** From Morsulus: New Da’ud Code for _wynn_ ****
The registration of _{AE}dv{w}en Eir{i’}ksd{o’}ttir_ this month introduces the Old English character _wynn_, which represents the sound _/w/_. _Wynn_ will be represented with the Da’ud code {w} or {W} for the lower case and upper case forms. When converted to Latin-1 for the published database, it will be represented as a “w”. As with other letters that are not in Latin-1, the fully Da’ud encoded form will be shown in a note. More information about the character _wynn_ can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wynn.
**** Society Pages ****
On August 25, at Darton Anniversary in the Kingdom of Lochac, Master Bernard Stirling was granted the rank of Herald Extraordinary. Master Bernard has been considered THE voice herald in the Crescent Isles, and a role model for all heralds, for longer than most people can remember.

If this is my last missive, thank you for reading my ramblings. I hope they have been informative and useful. I look forward to seeing where Amanda Coffyn takes things when she takes over from me.
Here are the successful registrations for Lochac from the August 2018 LoAR. Congratulations to all.
