Unto the heralds and populace of the Kingdom of Lochac does Amanda Martel, Crux Australis Principal Herald, send greetings.

This is the first of these approximately-monthly letters that I’ve written, and it still feels somewhat odd to sign my name with the new title.

I would like to thank my predecessor, Sorle Maknicoll, for his service to the Kingdom and the College of Heralds, and for his help in preparing me for this role. I can only hope to continue his good work and improvements to the College.

Sorle has agreed to take on my former office of Coffyn Herald for a short time to help smooth the transition.

Heralds are, when all is said and done, in the business of communication. This is most obvious for the voice heralds, but even book heralds strive to help the populace communicate, through names and display, who they are.

To that end, most of my plans as Crux Australis are based around improving communication, both within the College of Heralds, and between the College and the populace at large.

I look forward to working with you all to see these plans come to reality.

One of the values of the SCA that I value most is inclusivity.
Over the past several months, I have been working on a guide for the transgender members of our community, on how to navigate the registration process for names and devices.

In happy news, Lady Gwen verch David has completed the Pursuivant Readiness Portfolio with a very satisfactory result, and so it’s my pleasure to promote her to the heraldic rank of Pursuivant.
