CAMEL, October 2020
Unto the heralds and populace of the Kingdom of Lochac does Amanda Martel,
Crux Australis Principal Herald, send her last greetings.
And so here we are, the last of these missives I’ll be sending to the
lovely Kingdom of Lochac as Crux Australis. I apologise for it being
somewhat late, I’ve been struggling to work out what I should say.
It’s been an odd two years as the Principal Herald. I can’t say it’s been
anything like what I thought the job would be like. Answering complicated
questions – pro tip: “I have no idea” is a perfectly valid answer,
especially if you can point them at someone who will know. Doing
paperwork. Making decisions. Doing paperwork. Making bad puns.
Okay, so the bad puns was expected, and will continue.

My one piece of wisdom that I’ve gained in ten years as an officer (oh
gosh, is it actually ten years?) is this: An officer’s job is not to do
the work, it’s to see that the work gets done.
With that in mind, I’d like to thank the whole company of the College of
Heralds. A Kingdom officer can oversee and coordinate until the bonacons
come home, but with nobody doing the work to be overseen and coordinated,
that will achieve approximately nothing.
There are far too many names to list here – I’m a herald, names are for
reading off of index cards and shouting. But in particular, I’d like to
thank those who have served as my deputies. Every one of the Crux deputy
offices does a job that is Crux’s responsibility, that my predecessors
have wisely delegated. Without that great help, I would surely have melted
into a small burnt puddle.

Thank you, Lochac, it’s certainly been a ride.
Picture me retiring to a farm, like a beloved old golden retriever.
