CAMEL, November 2023
Greetings to the Heralds of Lochac from Isabella Crux.
I have chosen to reinvigorate the CAMEL to the best of my abilities and
hope to make it a monthly feature.
The September Letter of Acceptances and Returns has been issued –
https://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2023/09/23-09lar.html
For Lochac, we see the following acceptances:
- [1] Ásný in Freknótta. Name change from Elena Vesare.
The submitter’s prior name, Elena Vesare, is retained as an alternate.
- [2] Brick Walle. Name.
- [3] Cristin verch Reys. Name (see PENDS for device).
Submitted as Cristin verch Rys, the submitter requested authenticity
for 12th-13th century Welsh. As documented, this name does not meet that
request. The given name Cristin is documented to the 13th century, but
the spelling Rys does not appear until the 15th century. The spelling
Reys is documented to the 13th century. We have therefore changed this
name to Cristin verch Reys to fulfill the authenticity request.
As modified, this is an authentic Welsh name for the 13th century.
- [4] Cristin verch Reys. Badge. Vert, a triquetra and in base three
jasmine flowers argent.
Artist’s note: Please draw the flowers larger.
- [5] Eryl the beehyrde. Name change from holding name Gwyn of
Gildenwick and badge. Or, a bee and an orle sable.
Nice cant!
- [6] Eva von Danzig. Reblazon of device. Per bend sinister rayonny
gules and ermine, in bend two squirrels respectant counterchanged.
Blazoned when registered in March 2013 as Per bend sinister rayonny gules and ermine, two squirrels respectant counterchanged, two charges
respectant default to in fess per the Glossary of Terms Table 7. These
squirrels are in bend.
- [7] Eydís Ragnarsdóttir. Device change. Sable, on a pile between six
estoiles of five rays Or an estoile of five rays gules.
There is a step from core practice for the use of estoiles of fewer than
six rays.
The submitter’s prior device, Sable, on a pile between six mullets Or, an estoile of five rays gules, is released.
- [8] Gavriil Slotkovich. Name and device. Gules, a frog sejant and on a
chief invected argent a scorpion fesswise sable. - [9] Grete Engelhardtz. Name change from Margarete Clare Engelhardtz.
The submitter requested authenticity for 13-16th century German. This
name does not meet that request. The given name is in Low German, while
the byname is in High German. While such combinations are registerable,
they are not authentic.
The submitter’s prior name, Margarete Clare Engelhardtz, is released.
- [10] Isabella Semeonova. Name and device. Sable, on a fess Or a rose
proper, overall a dragon in annulo wings close breathing flames argent.
Isabella is the submitter’s legal given name.
- [11] Katrina of Alkmonton. Name and device. Azure, on a chevron
between three swans close argent five acorns palewise proper. - [12] Mabel Pine. Device. Per chevron sable and gules, two comets in
chevron and a unicorn’s head erased argent.
This device was pended for redraw on the June 2023 LoAR to ensure the
forms match the artwork that appeared on the LoI.
- [13] Maria Swietiska. Badge. (Fieldless) A cinquefoil pierced between
and conjoined to five mullets, all within and conjoined to an annulet
argent.
By precedent, “We only allow the piercing of charges on fieldless badges
when those charges were found pierced in period armory.” [Pádraig
Lowther, 12/2012, A-Lochac] Cinquefoils were found pierced in period
armory.
- [14] Razin al-Basir ibn Ja’far ibn Ma’bad. Name and device. Gules, in
saltire two scimitars Or, in chief a natural tiger’s head cabossed
argent marked sable.
Submitted as Razin al_Basir Namir bin Jafar bin Ma’bad, this name was
not constructed correctly. First, the element Namir is an ism (given
name), and not a nasab (lineage name). Where it appears in the name
requires it to be a nasab, and it therefore may not appear unmarked.
Second, the word bin only appears after a vowel sound, while the word
ibn appears after a consonant. Third, the Arabic given name Ja’far
normally has the letter ayn in it. While we do allow the ayn to be
dropped per SENA Appendix D, it must be dropped consistently. As it
appears in the last element in this name, we have added it to Ja’far.
Though the submitter allowed no major changes, they have expressly
approved changing this name to Razin al Basir ibn Ja’far ibn Ma’bad to
solve these issues. In addition to making this change, we have added a
hyphen to the element al-Basir as required by Arabic grammar; this is
considered a minor change.
The submitter requested authenticity for “Late 15th century
Ottoman-Turkish”. This name may meet that request. The submitter
documented these elements from “Period Arabic Names and Naming Practices
(2nd edition)” by Da’ud ibn Auda
(https://heraldry.sca.org/names/arabic-naming2.htm). While all of the
names that appear in this article can be found pre-1600, we cannot date
them any more firmly than that. Names found in this article are given
the benefit of the doubt for purposes of registration, but we cannot say
for sure if they are authentic for any specific point in time.
- [15] Robert de Mar. Household name House of Lenore and badge. Argent
chaussé vert, a raven reguardant sable.
This badge does not conflict with the badge of the Order of the Pelican,
(Tinctureless) A pelican vulning itself. Precedent says, “There is no
difference in type between a pelican and a chough sufficient to
remove the appearance of presumption.” [Ronan na f-Fiacal mac Conaill
and Uchtred Liefsson, 04/2022, R-Outlands]. We hereby partly overturn
this precedent: when both are in period postures, and when there are no
special attributes like vulning present in the corvid to blur the
distinction, there is at least a DC between corvids and pelicans. This,
plus the addition of a field, is enough to clear the conflict in this
case.
This badge also does not conflict with the device of Stigander Njálsson,
reblazoned elsewhere on this letter as Argent chaussé vert, in pale a raven sable perched atop a wooden smoking pipe fesswise bowl to dexter proper. There is an SC for the change in number of primary charges.
- [16] Thomasina Mariscotti. Badge. Azure, a pale argent fretty azure
between four heartsease flowers argent. - [17] William of Heselburn. Name and device. Gules, a chevron vert
fimbriated argent between two bears rampant Or and two swords in saltire
proper.
Nice late 13th century English name!
Congratulations to all.
We have a new King and Queen and I thank the outgoing King and Queen,
Radbot and Katherine, for an entertaining and whirlwind reign. We wish
you both all the best for your future endeavours.
The Coronation of King Aonghus and Queen Ginevra was a wonderful affair,
the site was spacious, the food delicious and the company most
excellent!
I am working to have the CHAF forms updated and they will not have a
mailing address, just the email addresses.
I am working my way through contacting my deputies, receiving reports
from them so I can update their contact details, and at this stage they
are:-
Coffyn Herald (Crux’s drop dead deputy and second in command)- Gwyneth
ferch Aeddan (once she steps down from Quarrel after Gwynhvyr of River
Haven returns to our fair lands)
Quarrel Herald – (maintains the Roll of Arms) Gwynhvyr of River Haven
(once back in Lochac)
Canon Herald – (maintains Canon Lore database and awards) – Arabella
d’Aubigny
Rocket Herald – (submissions) Sigrith parði
Chaine Shot Herald – (education) Pádraig Lowther
Powderhorn Herald – Uberto Renaldi
Mortar Herald – (IT) to be taken on by Annys Blodwell
Mangonel Herald – (silent Herald) is under construction so to speak and
more on that at a later date.
If you are the rank of Macer Herald then it may be time to look at
completing the Pursuivant test. I have had the pleasure of elevating
Gwyneth ferch Aeddan to this rank and look forward to elevating more.
Send your completed test to Chain Shot for review.
If you are aware of someone who has something of note heraldically, eg
first submission consultation, 10 years since first court, 10th or more
submission, etc, please can Group Heralds let me know so we can applaud
them.
I aim to implement an “ask a Herald” at events so the populace can
interact with group and visiting Heralds. Questions about how the
college of Heralds runs, how long does a submission take, can I use a
light sabre as a device and if not, what can I use? Submission advice
and access to consulting heralds will also be available. I am running
the first at Politarchopolis Fields of Gold and I hope other groups will
start these at their events.
Now for the not so fluffy item. I have just put in my first Quarterly
report and out of 12 Baronies and 5 shires, I received only 8 reports.
According to Lochac procedures manual: Missed reports, i.e. a report not
received before the person who should have received it is due to report,
must be notified to the group Seneschal. For groups over about 40
members, one missed quarterly report without reasonable excuse
(preferably offered before the deadline) is grounds for removal from
office. For smaller groups, two missed quarterly reports will be
considered equivalent to resignation from office. Repeated late reports
may also be cause for suspension or removal of an officer. I am granting
an amnesty for this quarter but those that have not reported, please
contact me so we can discuss any issues leading to non-reporting.
Look forward to more submissions’ and feedback from the populace.
Yours in service
Isabella Crux
